“I live to write and I write to live.” Says Purba Chakraborty

“I live to write and I write to live”.

This sentence sums up my life. Today, I can’t imagine my life without writing. If there is one thing that I would never give up, even if I am compelled by circumstances or my loved ones -that is writing. What started as a simple thing on my bucket list, turned into a passion and the reason for living.

After I completed my graduation in 2011, I wanted to write a book. Writing a book has been there on my bucket list since childhood. So, I started writing my first novel “Walking in the streets of love and destiny” which is about a girl torn between her life-partner and soul mate. It got published in 2012 and I was delighted with the fact that I ticked off a thing on my bucket list. I started receiving emails from the readers of the book, telling me how much they connected to the protagonist.

There was an emptiness gnawing at me when I was not writing anymore. Plenty of stories started playing on my mind that I wanted to write down or tell someone. When this urge felt uncontrollable, I started penning down my 2nd novel The Hidden Letters which is about a woman whose life turns upside down when she gives the bunch of letters to her husband that she kept hidden for about twenty years. It got published in 2014 and since then, there was no turning back.

I used to read many short stories in my childhood, especially the short stories penned by Rabindranath Tagore, Ruskin Bond and R.K Narayan. I remember there was an essay section in English during my school days where we had to write an essay based on imagination. I enjoyed writing the 1000 word imaginative essays and got praise from my teachers. I also won many creative writing competitions in my school days. So, reading and writing short stories have always been a part of my life.

Her favorite pupil – The short story that I wrote for Jukebox

My paternal uncle has a deaf and dumb school where I have seen many children with a speech disorder. There are some children who are extremely talented and their speech problem can also be cured. Seeing my uncle work on those children somehow inspired me to write this short story.

It is tricky to touch the readers through a 2000-3000 word short story.

I feel good characterization, a powerful message and anything that compels the reader to think makes a short story unique.

When I face the writer’s block,

I read a lot and listen to music. If the block persists for too long, I take a short vacation. Traveling always helps me. It makes me a better storyteller. I have authored 2 novels that I mentioned above and a poetry book The Heart Listens to No One. My third novel Canvas of a Mind, a mystery novel will be out this year. Apart from that, my short stories and poems have been published in various anthologies such as Stories for your Valentine, Kaafiyana, Melange, Fusion, Rhymes and Rhythm, Shades of Life and many others. Jukebox is the 10th anthology that I am a part of.

My writing inspiration,

If I have to choose only one story that has influenced me greatly, it would be The Night Train at Deoli by Ruskin Bond. I have read that story so many times and every time, it gives me a bittersweet feeling. I should also mention that the stories of Malgudi Days have influenced me a lot. The authors that inspired me to take up writing are Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Paulo Coelho, Jhumpa Lahiri, Ruskin Bond, Elizabeth Gilbert and Preeti Shenoy.

There are some books that have inspired me a lot. I can read them again and again. Some of them are The Last Poem (Shesher Kavita) by Rabindranath Tagore, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Life is what you make it by Preeti Shenoy, Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
