Who is John Thomas?
This might be a strange answer to a seemingly simple question. But I really don’t know who I am. If you ask me what I do for a living, I might list down a host of things that I do to earn money. If you ask me what I like, I will say that I like to learn new things, especially a new sport or a new game. But who I am, that is something I am still trying to figure out. So, in many ways, I am on a journey to find myself.
Why do you write?
I started writing just three and a half years back. My first attempt at any sort of creative writing was my debut novel — The Big Switch. In spite of the fact that I had not written before, I set myself such a daunting task because I knew I had something important to say, something that can make a difference to the readers. I was confident about the message and I think that this confidence also transpired into my writing. This is very much evident in the early reviews that have come in for the book. So, to summarize, I write because I feel that I have something to say. Because I have something to share with the readers.
How do you write?
I don’t have a schedule for writing yet. I write whenever I feel like writing. But I am working towards getting a schedule ready as it will speed up the writing process tremendously. And as far as the writing itself goes, I like to have clarity on what I am going to write. This, I think, is very important to the writing process. It helps in avoiding the frequent blocks that we encounter during the writing process. If there is clarity, I can write anywhere, anytime. In fact, a healthy chunk of my debut novel’s first draft was written on my mobile phone while commuting via the Mumbai locals. So, if you happen to travel by the Mumbai locals and see someone typing passionately into his mobile phone or laptop, chances are high that it is me. Please don’t forget to say ‘Hi!’
What is my book about?
What should one do when he realizes that he is caught up in the wrong career? What would you do? This same dilemma is faced by our protagonist, Keith, who is a 24-year-old man working as a software engineer in a reputed company. The novel is about what that does to get out of this precarious situation. You will like Keith because he represents a lot of us in a lot of ways. He is unsure about his purpose in life like a lot of today’s youth.
Here is an excerpt from the novel:
“Keith, not everyone has this kind of revelation. Most people spend their entire life doing something they don’t feel connected to. Doing a job that troubles them by the day and haunts them at night, they live their lives in quiet desperation. Every part of their
being wants to get out of the misery they are in. But they don’t take that vital step out of the misery. They commit spiritual suicide every single day. That is what you do when you aren’t fulfilling your purpose in life. You commit suicide. Many people don’t even realize that they are caught up in the wrong career. And you, my friend, have had this fortunate realization. You have got a chance to change things. I don’t want you to blame yourself when you turn 40. I don’t want you to imagine how things could have been different only if you had made a different decision…”
Book blurb: What does a 24-year-old man want in life? Love? A decent job? Keith has both. He is a software engineer at a reputable company and has a girlfriend whom he loves a lot. Yet, there is something missing in his life. He is not even close to being happy. Only after losing his girlfriend, he realizes what the reason for his unhappiness is. He realizes that he is caught up in the wrong career. With time running out, he knows that he must switch to a new career — one that makes him happy. But, is 24 too late to do that? Is he making a mistake? Find out as Keith follows his heart in pursuit of an impossible-looking dream.
Your advice for aspiring writers
“You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald
This, I believe, is very important. Good writers always have something to say, they want to share messages, ideas, characters and a host of other things with their readers. And I think, everyone has a particular something which they want to share with the world. In that way, all of us are just one step away from being writers. We just have to find that something and present it to the world in our own sweet way. Here is another piece of advice which I would like to share with anyone who aspires to do something worthwhile, be it writing or anything else. Very appropriately, it is also the last set of lines of my debut novel. Here you go! “I have just one thing to say. In everything that you do, follow your heart. Yes, I know that you have heard it many times. It might even seem a little boring to you. But that’s exactly what I have to say. Follow your heart. It knows where your treasure is, even when you don’t. And trust me, it will move mountains to take you there.”
