Bookworms are never acutely depicted in either books themselves or television series. When we do meet bookworms they seem to be obsessing over either one book or one series. We never get to see them salivating over books in a bookstore, we don’t see them as they move on from one great piece of literature to the next. Just claiming to be in love with the Harry Potter Series or re-reading the same classic that you fell in love with when you were fifteen doesn’t make you a bookworm. Being crazy about books implies browsing through second hand bookstores, pulling out dog-eared copies of books that have been in your bookshelf over the years and trying to make everyone you meet read all the books that you’ve read! Monogamy is not appreciated when you are a self-proclaimed bookworm. We therefore bring to you a list of characters from television and literature that were exactly like we had imagined book lovers and readers to be.

Lucas Scott from One Tree Hill

Initially, every episode of One Tree Hill opened and closed with a quote from literature which was a voiceover from Lucas Scott. He was rarely seen without a book, he was spotted browsing bookstores and even made a deal with Brooke Davis that he would take her out if she read a book he picked out! He goes on to become an author basing his novel, An Unkindness of Ravens, on his own life. While his book reading and browsing gets limited as the show goes on and ends when his character leaves the show, it was nice to see him fulfilling his role as a resident bookworm.

Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls

Rory’s love for books is displayed many times over through the course of Gilmore Girls. Her room, if it is of any indication, gives away the fact that she has had stored many books there. She mentions wanting a new bookshelf because her old one is full. A famous scene of hers is when she complains about her backpack being too heavy and reasons carrying three books around with her. Another indication that Rory Gilmore is truly a bookworm is shown in the fact that she likes spending hours upon hours browsing books in a bookstore, loves looking at books during the sales the town holds and makes her mother a deal to nine books with her to Europe. She continues reading in her very limited spare time and takes comfort in her books.

Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls

There have been debates many times over about which guy Rory should end up with – Dean, Jess or Logan. While Dean was the sweet guy and a wonderful first boyfriend and Logan was quintessential playboy, it is without a doubt that Jess Mariano was her match made in heaven. Given their love for books, and their ability to banter about anything under the Sun, Jess seriously made a lot of bookworms out there believe that their counterparts do exist. He was shown to have his nose always buried in a book. He loses himself quite easily in a bookstore. He and Rory would have probably had the perfect relationship if it had come at a time when they were much older. But that is a topic for another time. Jess Mariano was the perfect depiction of the brooding bookworm that we don’t see in television these days.

Phoebe Martins from Bookishly Ever After

Before I read Bookishly Ever After, I had read a lot of other books which claimed to have heroines who were in love with books. But with Phoebe Martins it wasn’t just one book that she was obsessing over. She had plenty of books that she read and re-read. She is shown waiting in line to get her book signed by her favourite author. She reads during meetings. She reads during lunch break. She reads because she doesn’t like the fact that reality interrupts her reading time!

Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief

The title of the book is a dead giveaway for the protagonist who steals books from the mayor’s house in order to escape the horrors of her world, trying to learn new words. She finds comfort in the worlds of the books. And even though she could have stolen anything (as her friend Rudy points out) it is books that Liesel finds herself drawn to the most. Liesel is a bookworm in her own right and she chooses to ignore her world which has been torn asunder by devouring book after book.

Matilda Wormwood from Matilda

The story of the young girl who doesn’t quite fit in with her family finds solace in the company of the books she reads. The books make her believe that she isn’t alone. Matilda has finished reading quite a number of books in her young age, and truly is a little bookworm.

Hermione Granger from The Harry Potter Series

There are jokes about how Harry Potter should be thankful that Hermione Granger read books! And we couldn’t agree more. Whether it was the book that clued them in about Nicholas Flamel in their first year or the Tales of Beedle the Bard in their final, time and again, Hermione proved that reading can save your life. She always had her nose buried in a book, went to the library whenever she had a doubt and proved to be an inspirational role model for young women all over the world. Hermione showed us that being a book nerd was really cool! Personally, we would love to see more such depiction of bookworms both in books and on screen. Because it is a more realistic take on what our lives are like. We wait for the books to go on sale, we pre-order books that we want to get our hands on and yes, we order a lot of books online! Can you think of any other bookworms that were justifiably portrayed? Let us know in the comments.
