Goa-based Keralite author M A Chacko, a teacher based in Goa, retired as Principal after over three decades of service. Post-retirement, Mr. Chacko has now fully turned to writing, pursuing a passion that he has always nurtured. In this interview with Writers Melon, M A Chacko takes us into his world of writing and his latest book, Two Leaves and a Bud.
M A Chacko – Origin and Acknowledging the Writer Within:
M A Chacko was born in a rustic background in a remote hamlet near Sabarimala, Kerala. As a child, he roamed the ancestral property, deriving inspiration from nature. Years later, during his stay in Goa, his delight at a gift – a book written in Malayalam – received by his roommate, revealed a different side of him.
“When I was attending a conference for teachers, the resource person gave the participants a questionnaire where we were given to answer, ‘What would you like to be known as?’ It was probably a ploy to evaluate the mission of the participants and their love for the profession. Almost everyone wrote ‘teacher’, but I hesitated and answered: ‘writer’. Frankly speaking, I had wanted to be a writer for a long time. But until then, I hadn’t written anything worthwhile.”
M A Chacko – The Writing Process:
The world of writing is an ambiguous place to make decisions in. But for authors like M A Chacko, the reason behind their writing is very simple.
“I write for the passion of writing and I usually think about the matter for long. Once the theme is formed roughly, I start writing. I never think of number of words or pages but in the process, certain characters, anecdotes creep in and the process continues. Once my work is ready, I forget it for long. I make necessary changes, additions or deletions at the later stage, often revisiting it two or more times to clarify the story clearer.”
Two Leaves and a Bud:
Two Leaves and a Bud is M A Chacko’s fourth book. Asked about what intriguing title is all about, he is more than happy to oblige, revealing more about why he chose to name it that way.
“Two Leaves and a Bud is a collection of three novellas and the theme of each is different and unique. The reader has the luxury of visiting different storylines in one single book.
Story 1, ‘The Faithful Husband’ is a miniature political saga set in Kerala’s past. And story 2, ‘Two Leaves and a Bud’ is a story of an artist and his art. Story 3 is a story of holidays and the mundane affairs of day-to-day life. I chose the title of the second story as the title for the book for I think that the other stories somehow coincide with the middle story, the bud.”
M A Chacko – Bibliography:
“I have always believed that I am the driving force behind my past or present work. Two Leaves and a Bud is my fourth book, my first three being The Circus and Other Stories, How He Met Me and Other Stories, and Those Memorable Days.”
“I also have a keen liking to observe people’s behavior and quirky ways. And I read mainly on Literature, Economics, and Politics, and love reading both classic and modern literature. The books I’ve read recently are The Hundred Years of Solitude, Sesame and Lilies, and The Great Derangement.”
Thoughts on Writing and Advice for Aspiring Authors:
“Writers should write on what they know about. Don’t write about the life of Mount Everest if you have not experienced the chilly weather and flora and fauna of the region.
And don’t be surprised by the rejection slips from publishers. Believe that some trees blossom late in their life cycle.”
