About the book
Emperor Ashok created a secret society comprising nine chosen members, who were known as the ‘Nine Unknown’, to help preserve knowledge that, in the wrong hands, could be used to destroy humanity.
Little did Ashok know that the safekeeping of such knowledge had a high price to it; that shadows walk amidst us and that sometimes our actions unspool unimaginable consequences.
The first of two volumes, this book has the power to transform your idea of reality!
My take on the book
Recently, I read somewhere that all the stories in the world are same, very done and dusted, and what sets a good writer apart from the rest is their interpretation. We have all heard of the great Kalinga War, one that was so bloody and full of destruction & carnage that it changed Ashok, the king who dreamt of having whole of India under his rule. But this book plays with not one simple little historical fact but takes myths & facts and turns them all into one magical read. It will take you on a journey of what it could have been, from both the conqueror and the conquered.
What I liked
The language is simple but classy. And the twists and turns will make you take a step back and go back again. The book is around 234 pages and I finished it under 3 hours. If that does not say it’s an amazing page turner, I don’t know what will. I especially loved the nine subjects and then their ‘teachers.’ And by combining two very different ideas and making it into one big entertaining story, the author deserves a big batch of chocolate chip cookies from my end. Since now I run a risk of giving out spoilers, which I absolutely don’t wan’t to do, I would simply ask you to get your own copy. I mean a book that makes reading history fun deserves a read, right? Trust me you won’t be able to stop before you finish it all.
So, I, Manali Dey would love to give Ashok And The Nine Unknown a big 5 on 5 along with lots of chocolate chip cookies. After reading this book I went to a friend of mine who finds history fascinating – yes, you heard that right. And I was told that there are a few myths about Ashok’s secret society. So, this wonderful work of fiction can in parts actually be this big non-fiction story after all. Cue in the goosebumps!
