Author Interview : Deepak Kripal

I am sort of an explorer. I like to hear good stories, travel into the wild with my friends.
Proud to be a doctor, and ambitious in a strange way. Not in the material sense, but have a spiritual side, apart from 5-6 more sides, that I am yet to discover!

Geeta Nair gets to discover some more aspects of this ambitious writer Deepak Kripal who has recently penned down a fantasy novel – The Devil’s Gate – An Impossible Journey.

Q: Whom do you love more: The doctor in you or the writer? Why?
Deepak : I mean how do you choose? Both make this weird parcel that I am. You take out one, and I am no more myself!

Q: The secret behind the selection of the plot for ‘The Devil’s Gate: An Impossible Journey?’ Why did you choose animals as your lead character?

Deepak :There is no secret to it, actually! Just that a really different idea emerged into my consciousness and blew me away. I thought the idea had immense potential for a captivating, innovative and engaging story. And I just tried to fulfill that promise by penning it down. That’s how the idea came to me in the first place. The idea that what happens if, one day, animals decide that since we can’t negotiate with the humans regarding our shrinking habitats, why not try to negotiate a deal with the demons for co-existence. This idea excited my no end. And obviously, in a story based on this idea, lead characters would be animals only.

Q: How difficult it was to plant conversations on the lips of Katy and Dug?

Deepak : It wasn’t difficult at all. Once the basic framework of the story was ready, which took some brainstorming to do, rest was relatively easy and naturally flowing. Once I had the grasp of the soul of the story, and I knew what I was doing, it was just a pleasure to write the story. In fact, I never felt like I was writing it. It was like I was watching a story unfold in front of my eyes. The story was writing itself!

Q: How was the publishing process?  Was it easy and smooth or did you have to knock on a few
doors?

Deepak :Well, six publishers rejected my script, saying it did not fit into their publishing programme. But I was only expecting it, since I was a debut author, and I had written a story on an unusual subject. Fortunately, Leadstart Publishing saw some merit in the story, and took it forward for publishing. Overall, I would say it was fairly smooth.

Q: Would you attempt writing books in other genres like Romance/Horror/Historical? Would you write a book in Hindi too?

Deepak : If I happen to have
a good story, I’ll write any genre it belongs to. As I told you, all that matters, is a good story.
Currently, I am playing with 3-4 ideas of drama genre. I have ideas for mystery/thriller as well. I am still in brainstorming mode. So, it will take some time before I can tell you about my next. I write poems and shayaris in hindi, which you can see on my blog (theoriginalpoetry.blogspot.in). I think, for the time being, I’ll restrict my story writing to English only. About the future, you never say never!

Q: Your tips for writing a successful book or blog post.

Deepak : Only one, the subject or the story should have a soul of its own. And it should be satisfying for the reader, not only emotionally, but intellectually as well.

Q: Your advice to budding writers.

Deepak :Be patient as you carve out your story. Take time to formulate ideas, penning them, and re-edit the first draft many times before submitting it to publishers.

Rejections will happen, but eventually, sun will shine!
